Chic in Munich: Charles Hotel, Lodenfrey and Oktoberfest Watch

Munich Pt 1

Last week, I wrote about my recent visit to Munich. Its medieval character makes this city one of the most charming and chic cities in Europe. Munich is best known for Oktoberfest – the beer festival, but the city has so much more to offer other than this annual celebration…

This Bavarian city, in the south of Germany, is full of tradition and culture but also has a refined and luxury feel about it and is certainly a trip that I would highly recommend. Perfect for that special surprise trip for a long weekend – a guaranteed winner!

Along with organised city tours, bespoke limousine services are widely available to drop you off directly at your favourite shops or museums.

But firstly, you need a place to stay and there’s nowhere better than the Charles Hotel.

There are several reasons to stay at this 5-star-superior Hotel: For instance its very central but in a very quiet location on the edge of the Old Botanical Garden.

The rooms and suites in this hotel are the largest in town and offer a lot of space to relax. Rooms are equipped with the most modern features. The furnishings and decorations mirror the impressive design style of Olga Polizzi, the Creative Interior Designer of the Rocco Forte Hotels and sister of the founder Sir Rocco. The presidential suite is just stunning with over 200 sq meters offering a private entrance and elevator, everything you feel truly at home and special.

Take your time to enjoy this wonderful hotel.

The Charles Spa which radiates tranquillity with its exclusive environment is a great place to relax after a day of shopping. The 800 sq meter Spa has the largest indoor hotel pool in Munich, heated relaxing chairs, steam bath, sauna, wellness showers, relaxation room as well as five treatment rooms for relaxing treatments. I recommend getting a massage, is was just incredible! I just loved the spa. Ideal for a late afternoon, when you’re feeling a bit tired and need to be filled with energy in order to enjoy the hotel bars and restaurant…

Then, just before dinner, drop down to the hotel’s popular bar with its impressive whiskey assortment and pleasant live piano. The Restaurant, DAVVERO, is not only renowned for its modern furnishings but most of all for its outstanding cuisine. The Restaurant specialises in some of the finest Mediterranean delicacies. I liked this restaurant a lot. A lot of space, large chandeliers, and a glass front with a view of the Old Botanical Garden in a comfortable atmosphere, surrounded by simple elegance making each stay an unforgettable experience.

You can also enjoy a drink in front of the Old Botanical Garden in the generously arranged terrace in the middle of the city and still in the midst of greenery.

The secret of the success of this Hotel is, however, the staff whose aim it is to ensure with natural friendliness and charm, but also with professional efficiency, that the guest has a magnificent stay.

How about a little shopping?

Just a few minutes walk from the Charles Hotel, make your way to Lodenfrey: the most well known and most prestigious department store Munich.

Lodenfrey is an institution.

Johann Georg Frey started his business in weaving clothing in 1842, and invented a new material called “Loden” which was a boiled-wool textile similar to felt. Thirty-six years later, Frey Jr improved the invention of his father by developing a water resistant version of the original. This thick, warm fabric and became the cloth of choice to make good warm coats that became the traditional wear for alpine men wanting to protect themselves from the region’s harsh mountain weather. And, yes, you can still find (but in a more modern style) these famous garments at LodenFrey.

I was welcomed by the manager of the shop, Mr. Quentin Abel, who kindly welcomed me to his store and to discover its incredible atmosphere. The store has 6 floors, each with a different décor, where you feel the urge to discover the products and stopping at mini bars with scented water, comfortable sofas… all very intimate and certainly with a VIP feel.

There is an Important area dedicated to children’s clothing with a mini amusement park! Carousel, slides, and a corner for kids to design and draw … it was really a delight to see the children having fun there and an idea that other retailers should follow!

The floor dedicated to traditional Bavarian costumes is a “must see”. With typical Bavarian décor of light wood and mountain decoration, you will discover the “haute couture” of traditional German mountain wear, developed with the same old techniques, in tissues of the highest standard.

Apart from their traditional Bavarian costumes, the store is also a haven of fashion accessories, offering plenty of high-end name brands such as Burberry, Cerruti, Max Mara, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Givenchy, Tommy Hilfiger, Moncler, Dsquared2, Missoni, Diana Von Funtersberg and a large selection of exclusive designers.

The stores superb services includes – a VIP service, a personal shopper, delivery to hotel and babysitter to take care of the children while you enjoy time for shopping.

A real paradise for shopping!

Now, I have found the best jewellery store in Munich and want to share it with you…

Hilscher – It’s the perfect jewellery store where you are guaranteed to find a great selection of pearls, diamonds, emeralds, rubies and of course watches with a special top-class selection of Rolex, Tudor, Hublot, Tissot, Omega, Zenith, Chopard, Tag Heuer, Breitling.

Mr. Kai-Pierre Thiess, the manager of the boutique and whom I was very pleased to have the pleasure of meeting during my stay in Munich… With an incredible passion for his work and business, he told me the story of the store that started in 1947. After two generations, the company is well known in Munich for its fantastic range of watches of high quality and unusual jewellery.

The boutique is small, but the selection is amazing. And all of the very friendly staff have a long experience in jewellery and are experts in precious stones and rare pieces.

The company sponsors various events such as golf and tennis championships, but also private events where they sometimes provide bespoke products for the occasions.

To give you an idea, since 2007, Hilscher has produced a series of unique watches called “Munich Watch”. This watch was originally manufactured as limited edition for Oktoberfest. Each year, Hilscher produces a new watch that is sold in small quantities (it was initially created for a select group of 46 people, who did not want to use their prized watches during the party). Since then, every year, a small amount of these watches are sold, and logically “collected” since the design and colours are developed according to the theme of each year’s Oktoberfest …

Something really unique!

And I am so lucky … Mr Thiess kindly offered me one!

Lovely!
